Ours is a family of four; each with different interests. Dad is a real estate tycoon who comes from a long line of North Carolinian farmers. Ther claim to fame, as we understand it, is their proximity to Rocky Mount barbecue - the original. If you have to ask whether it’s tomato or vinegar-based, don’t bother ordering any. Mom is an editor working at the cutting edge of marine science in Gloucester Point, where the lovely York River meets up with the Chesapeake Bay. When not trying to unravel the nuances of very mysterious marine scientists explaining their latest research, she loves to kayak, take in the long view of the farm, and talk to her chickens. The kids are into soccer, art, kayaking, ice-skating, and all things crafty. They have a bottomless pit of patience, which they shower upon the motley assemblage of farm animals that have, invited or not, made their home here. As of last count, that was 6 cats, 1 dog, and about 20 chickens. But, fence posts are in and we expect to expand our farm life by a few goats, a horse or two, and perhaps a half-dozen cows before winter arrives. |
PRODUCTS We sell fresh eggs and farm-grown honey in one- and two-pound jars. Folks who know their honey say ours is the best around! Our beekeeper is the nicest man on earth - and not coincidentally, the state honey inspector. He even looks nice in a white ET suit.
Last spring we spent the better part of a 3-day weekend drilling little holes in oak logs, filling them with shiitake mushroom spawn, and plugging them till we were delirious. The book was right, and we started harvesting shiitake mushrooms last November!
